Usage guide

Getting started

A quick overview of what the app is for and how to begin using it with a new communicator.

What is My Voice?

My Voice is a communication app that helps people express themselves using picture symbols. Users tap symbols to build sentences and share their needs, feelings, and thoughts.

Before you begin

Before introducing the app, take some time to understand how the person currently communicates. Consider: • How they express themselves now (pointing, gestures, sounds, eye contact) • What they understand when spoken to • How comfortably they can tap and interact with a screen • Who they communicate with most and in which settings This helps you choose the right grid size, starting vocabulary, and approach that best matches the person’s needs.

Implementation strategies

Introduce the app gradually using these tried-and-tested tips: 1. Start with a small core vocabulary (5–10 high-frequency words like "want", "more", "stop", "go", "help") before expanding. 2. Use the 3-column grid initially to provide larger, easier-to-target buttons. Increase columns only as motor accuracy improves. 3. Teach in natural, motivating contexts — during meals, play, favourite activities — not in isolated drill sessions. 4. Follow the "80/20 rule": the communicator should experience success at least 80% of the time to maintain motivation. 5. Expect a learning curve of weeks to months. Consistent daily exposure is more important than session length.
